Since it opened its first branch in 2000, Village Bank managers at each branch were entrusted to make all NSF pay/return decisions, including whether to charge overdraft fees. The process created confusion and resulted in preferential treatment for some customers, putting the bank’s reputation and compliance at risk.

Village Bank’s discretionary overdraft program now aligns completely with all federal overdraft guidance. Efficiency has improved and bank managers have more time to focus on customers. Fee income has increased and it is now easier to track and manage.
